The Beggar's Opera
While The Beggar's Opera lampoons famous figures of the day it also deals with social inequity by contrasting the low-class thieves and whores with their aristocratic and bourgeois "betters". The Beggar's Opera influenced later British stage comedies and comic opera, for example Gilbert and Sullivan, and is the ancestor of the modern musical. In 1920 The Beggar's Opera began a amazing run of 1,463 performances.

What technology would you like to use to copy this book to your phone?
Bluetooth
Memory Card
USB Connection
Direct to Phone
Bluetooth
- Pair the phone and your PC.
- Copy the .jar to the phone.
- The phone may ask you to choose a destination for the file, there should be some 'application' area available.
(See howstuffworks or
wikipedia for some background on bluetooth).
External Memory Cards
- Copy the book files to the external memory card (e.g. miniSD, microSD) for your phone.
- Insert the card into the phone.
- On the phone, locate the file and launch it.
- Some phones will run the book directly from the memory card.
- Some will want to install the book in the phone's main memory and will ask if you want to download or install it.
- They will most likely install the program in the usual application area.
- Note: on Blackberry devices use the media player and choose 'explore' from the menu to navigate the memory card, 'open' the .jar to begin installation.
USB Connection
Your phone may have a USB connector and manager software.
- Run the manager program.
- Copy the .jar file to a folder in the phone.
Note: The manager software provided with some phone models (eg.LG model U8360)
may not install JavaTM programs to the phone. You will need a Java uploader, for example
Game-Thing offers a fantastic Java uploader that
also does many of the ' vanilla ' manager tasks (like transferring photos) much better than some phone software.
Direct to phone "over the air"
If you can access the Internet from your phone then:
- Use the phone's browser to navigate to http://mobile.booksinmyphone.com
- Download directly by quoting the Download Code for the desired book.
- The Download Code appears on each book's page.
- Click on the link for the book you want to download
- The phone should prompt you to install it. Usually this is a two click process; the first to fetch details of the download, and the second to allow installation.
Things to note:
- Keep in mind the distinction between mobile and internet downloads.
If you download using the phone's browser from mobile.booksinmyphone.com then the phone should try to directly install the book.
Downloading via www.booksinmyphone.com is designed to support those without internet connectivity on their phone and will give you files that need to be
transferred / installed on the phone from a PC.
- BlackberryTM devices can make use of our books. Note that corporate / carrier firewalls and policies can prevent the device from installing our books.
You can always talk to your service provider, they may have a simple tweak to enable installation.
- Some phones will have maximum jar sizes smaller than our largest books. We have a selected list of books that cover all our sizes so you can easily find the limits of your phone.
- WindowsTM based mobile phones, PalmTM devices, and iPhonesTM may not have a JavaTM environment installed.
If that were the case then they might happily download from mobile.bookinmyphone.com but then not be able to make use of the download.
Similarly they would happily download the .zip file from the internet site but them be unable to use the resulting download.
We believe there are java environments available but cannot make any recommendations.
If you have some personal experience in this are we would like to be able to pass it on to our other users - so please let us know.
