Regarded by many as one of the first European novels and a classic of its era. Published anonymously in March 1678, and set in the royal court of Henry II of France a century earlier, it tells the story of the unspoken and unrequited love between Mme de Cleves and the irresistible Duc de Nemours. It recreates that era with remarkable precision as a backdrop for a poignant study of the human heart.
A young sea Captain, new to both his ship and crew, finds a naked man holding onto the side of the ship one night. Hiding the man, Leggatt, in his cabin the Captain learns of Leggatt's murderous past. The two develop a bond and the Captain continues to conceal Leggett's presence. But how long can he be kept hidden from suspicious crew members? What will happen when the skipper from Leggatt's ship visits? Can Leggatt escape the ship or himself?
The works of H.G. Wells are well known for their prophetic ideas. The War in the Air is one of these works. Written in 1907, it presented the idea of using aircraft for the purposes of warfare. The protagonist in this story is Bert Smallways who becomes accidentally entangled in a German plot to bomb New York City from the air. As the bombardments and air warfare become more intense and destruction surrounds him, Bert faces the true horror of war ... even after it has ostensibly ended.
