Uncle Tom's Cabin was the best selling novel of the nineteenth century. The book is named for the central character and depicts the harsh reality of slavery. The book had such a significant impact that on meeting Stowe, Abraham Lincoln said; "So this is the little lady who made this big war". A product of it's time, the book is interesting also for it's illustration of stereotypes that even abolitionists could not recognise.

Vanity Fair was the first work that Thackeray published under his own name. Extremely well-received at the time, it is now remembered as a classic of English literature. While the novel satirizes society in early 19th-century England, Thackeray meant the book to be not only entertaining but also instructive.

Sienkiewicz received the 1905 Nobel Price in Literature for his "outstanding merits as an epic writer".

The novel follows the developing love between a Christian woman and a Roman Patrician in the time of Nero. The romantic story arc is set against the conflict of the moral systems of the long established Roman Empire and the developing Christianity. Sienkiewicz uses this setting to explore morality and power, and his observations remain relevant today.

The novel is based on extensive historical research and gives a good view of life in those times.

Written in 1792 it is one of the earliest works on "the woman question". The controversial life of its author caused the earliest feminists to distance themselves from the work. Some major themes include education for girls, the debased position of women in society, the necessary equality of men and women, and the right of women to work.

Picks up where the film Troy (loosely based on Homer's Iliad) leaves off and follows Aeneis a fleeing Trojan as he travels to Italy, makes war on the Latins, and becomes an ancestor of the Romans. Virgil was the "Latin world's Shakespeare".
