Lady Audley's Secret |
Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1837 - 1915) |
Lady Audley has a secret - necessity turns Robert Audley, her aristocrat step-nephew, into a detective bent on uncovering it. Lady Audley's Secret is a compelling example of the Victorian sensation novel, the genre that focused on shocking subject matter jarringly presented in familiar or domestic settings. Originally published in 1862 it has remained in print ever since and retains its power to challenge and entertain. |

American Notes |
Charles Dickens (1812 - 1870) |
By the time Dickens set out for America in 1842, he was already a well known author and celebrity. His illuminating book American Notes is his depiction of the New World, a place with both admirable (well run hospitals, prisons, law courts) and despicable (slavery, unsavoury manners) qualities. When first published, his accounts and opinions incited hostile reactions on both sides of the Atlantic. |
